Jane mines the history of cinema for traces of the subconscious mind. Having created a dream-film omnibus that interprets and recreates a group of artists’ dreams (collective:unconscious, 2016), oneiric film has long been a subject of fascination and close study for the author. The films catalogued herein present a range of dreams, nightmares, and surrealist fantasies. They inhabit liminal spaces, between sleep and waking, life and death. Within the syllabus lies an argument about the essential nature of cinema; it’s a language that lives inside places in the psyche that otherwise lie beyond our reach.
